Alternative Land Uses

Throughout the past five years members of Friends of BAREC have sought to present alternative uses for the BAREC property to the Santa Clara City Council. These conceptual plans have been continually ignored as either being unworthy or not economically feasible for the land.

Friends of BAREC are not opposed to Senior Housing being placed on the BAREC property. However, any placement of the housing should be done in such a way that it is not only respectful of our Senior Citizens, but also, conducive to the history of the land.  Placing the Senior Housing complex so that it fronts busy Winchester Boulevard is not only an affront to our Senior Citizens, but also, to the neighbors in the neighborhoods surrounding the BAREC property as well. Surely, this improper placement will have a  tremendous impact on the traffic patterns in what is already a very congested, prime commercial area.

A mixed land use concept, involving 'open space,' commercial, sports and residential had been presented to the City Council of Santa Clara that would have been economically better for the City Council to consider, but was rejected. Still further, members of the SaveBAREC organization have presented urban plans that should be given consideration given the dwindling 'open space' land in our community. One example of this is the Full Circle Farms development in Sunnyvale, California.

Friends of BAREC would like you to review some of these concepts that have been presented and decide for yourself whether or not this 17 acres of 'open space' land is worthy of being given more consideration other then just filling it up with more 'high density' housing.
