Friends of BAREC Dedicated to Preserving Santa Clara's 'Mission City' Heritage
|
|
There is no single person who can say for sure what will happen to the BAREC property if the people of Santa Clara rightfully turn down the City or State's attempt to sell off the remaining 11 acres to private development. There have been attempts by prominent individuals to state publicly that the State could put a prison on this property. If this is so, then the state must expect the same strong opposition as it is currently seeing for its current proposal. There is no doubt, that strong opposition would come from not only the members in the surrounding neighborhood, but also, from the strong business communities which are adjacent to the BAREC property. It should be stated that the BAREC property is public land, owned by the State of California. Implicit in this statement is, it is the people who 'own' this land and it is they who have the inherent right to decide what is to be placed there. The State does not have the exclusive right to be the enabler for one private entity to determine what should happen to this land. The BAREC history is long and storied. This history of this land has been one that has helped people in need. And that is the principal reason why Friends of BAREC are not objecting to Senior Housing being placed on this property. What we are fighting for, is what happens to the other 11 acres of land. Your 'NO' vote will mean that a proper discussion can be held to discuss what should be done with the remaining 11 acres of Public Land. Your 'NO' Vote will mean that Senior Housing units to be placed on the property will be built with sufficient living space, access to agricultural gardens, exercise facilities and necessary commercial stores. Your 'NO' vote will mean that Winchester Boulevard will not be turned into a traffic nightmare for not only the surrounding neighbors, but also, for all of us who use this busy boulevard on a daily basis. Your 'NO' vote will means that other more viable, economic options can be considered for this prime commercial area. Your 'NO' vote will mean that a proper public discussion can be held about choosing the best methods for properly reducing the toxins currently residing in the soil.
